Launch of Japan's first electric streetcar line

On July 9, 1904, Kyoto Electric Railway opened Japan's first commercial electric streetcar line, running from central Kyoto to Fushimi. Powered by overhead trolley wires and using American-style single-truck cars built locally under license, the 4-mile route overcame steep grades and narrow streets through innovative engineering. Promoted by industrialist Eiichi Shibusawa, it reduced reliance on horse-drawn transport and accelerated urban modernization during the Meiji era. The line carried over 10,000 passengers on opening day and sparked a boom in electric railways across Japan. Its success influenced subway development in Tokyo and Osaka, cementing electric traction as a cornerstone of Japanese rail technology.
