Inauguration of the Berlin Stadtbahn

July 9, 1873 saw the ceremonial opening of the initial segment of the Berlin Stadtbahn, an elevated railway designed to relieve street congestion in the growing German capital. Spanning from the Schlesisches Bahnhof to the Charlottenburg station, the line used steam locomotives hauling wooden coaches on wrought-iron viaducts engineered by architects like Hermann Gerson. This project, backed by the Prussian state railways, overcame challenges of navigating dense urban areas and integrating with existing long-distance lines. It carried thousands of daily commuters and symbolized Germany's rapid industrialization.
