Opening of Atlantic & Pacific Railroad section

On July 10, 1864, the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad inaugurated service on its first completed section west of St. Louis, Missouri. Financed by investors including figures tied to the earlier Pacific Railroad Acts, the line overcame challenging river crossings and hilly terrain using early wood-burning 4-4-0 locomotives. This opening facilitated the movement of settlers, goods, and mail during the critical Reconstruction era, directly supporting westward expansion. The railroad later merged into the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway, leaving a lasting legacy in regional connectivity and inspiring countless model railroad layouts depicting 19th-century American railroading.
