First Railway in Württemberg Opens

On July 11, 1842, the Kingdom of Württemberg inaugurated its first railway with a modest 4.5-kilometer line connecting Cannstatt to Untertürkheim. Powered by early steam locomotives imported from England, the route served both passengers and freight, linking the Neckar River valley to emerging industrial centers. Engineer Carl Friedrich von Etzel oversaw construction amid challenging terrain and limited capital. This modest beginning laid the foundation for the expansive Royal Württemberg State Railways, which later integrated with the German national network. The event symbolized the arrival of the industrial age in southern Germany and spurred rapid economic growth in the region.
