First railway opens in the Kingdom of Hanover

On July 10, 1842, the first section of the Hanover–Lehrte railway opened, connecting the capital of the Kingdom of Hanover with the important junction at Lehrte. This 16 km line used early steam locomotives built by British manufacturers and was part of a broader effort to link German states through rail. King Ernest Augustus supported the project to modernize transport and stimulate trade. It later became a key segment of the Hanover–Berlin route, demonstrating how early rail lines overcame engineering challenges like swampy terrain with innovative embankments.
