New York elevated line extension completed

On July 10, 1902, the Manhattan Railway Company opened an extension of the Second Avenue Elevated, improving rapid transit access in Upper Manhattan. The project featured steel viaducts and allowed 3-car trains pulled by steam locomotives to serve growing neighborhoods. This expansion helped relieve street congestion before the subway era and connected with ferry terminals. It later influenced the design of the IRT subway system that replaced many els in the 1940s.
