Simplon Tunnel Breakthrough

On July 11, 1904, the final blast connected the two headings of the Simplon Tunnel between Switzerland and Italy. At 12.3 miles, it surpassed all previous Alpine tunnels and required innovative ventilation and water-cooling systems to combat extreme heat. Swiss and Italian crews worked from both ends under the Jura-Simplon Railway. The tunnel enabled direct express services between Paris and Milan, dramatically cutting journey times and boosting trans-Alpine trade. Its engineering lessons influenced later projects such as the Lötschberg and Gotthard base tunnels.
