Metropolitan Railway Opens

On July 13, 1863, the Metropolitan Railway inaugurated the first underground passenger line in history, running between Paddington (Bishop's Road) and Farringdon Street in London. Designed by engineer John Fowler, the four-mile cut-and-cover route used specially adapted steam locomotives with condensing apparatus to reduce smoke and steam in the tunnels. The opening day carried 38,000 passengers, proving the viability of subterranean urban transit. This innovation directly addressed London's severe street congestion caused by rapid industrialization and population growth. It laid the foundation for the entire London Underground network and inspired similar systems in cities worldwide, transforming urban mobility and city planning.
