First Cuban Railroad Opens

The Havana-Bejucal line, engineered with British assistance and using 4-2-0 locomotives imported from the UK, overcame tropical terrain challenges including swamps and dense vegetation. This 27 km route connected the capital to inland sugar plantations, boosting export economies just before the global sugar boom. Key promoter was the Spanish colonial government under Captain-General Miguel Tacón. It demonstrated how rail could transform colonial logistics and inspired similar projects across Latin America, establishing Cuba as an early rail adopter outside Europe and North America.
