Northern Pacific Reaches Montana

Construction crews of the Northern Pacific Railway drove the final spike on the Dakota-Montana extension, using 4-4-0 American-type locomotives to haul supplies across the badlands. Led by chief engineer John W. Kendrick, the project overcame harsh weather and Native American land disputes. This link opened the Yellowstone Valley to settlement and cattle shipping, directly supporting the post-Civil War westward expansion and the growth of Billings as a rail hub. The arrival of the first scheduled train carried dignitaries and marked a major step toward the transcontinental Northern Pacific route completed three years later.
