First Train Reaches Leadville

Narrow-gauge locomotives of the Denver & Rio Grande climbed steep grades and crossed high passes to deliver supplies and passengers to one of the richest silver districts in the world. The arrival transformed Leadville from an isolated camp into a major industrial center, enabling rapid expansion of mining operations and population growth. The line later became part of the standard-gauge network and remains a celebrated chapter in Colorado’s narrow-gauge heritage.
