Inauguration of Japan's first monorail

Tokyo's Ueno Zoo Monorail began service on July 17, 1954, as a 0.3 km demonstration line built by the Japan Monorail Co. It featured a suspended design with two-car trains powered by overhead wires, solving space constraints inside the zoo. Engineer Shigeo Tanaka led the project, drawing inspiration from Wuppertal's Schwebebahn. Though short-lived until 2001, it proved monorail viability for urban settings and inspired larger systems like the Osaka Monorail. The line symbolized Japan's post-war technological optimism and rail innovation, attracting international attention from transit planners.
