Formation of the Reading Railroad Company

On July 17, 1846, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania chartered the Reading Railroad Company, merging earlier entities like the Philadelphia and Reading Rail Road. This consolidation enabled efficient transport of coal from Schuylkill County mines to Philadelphia ports. Key figures included president John Tucker, who expanded the network aggressively. The railroad introduced innovative iron bridges and early use of 4-4-0 locomotives suited for heavy loads. Its success fueled industrial growth during the antebellum period and later influenced labor movements with the 1877 strikes.
