Western Pacific Railroad Incorporated

Incorporated on July 17, 1903, the Western Pacific Railroad aimed to create an independent transcontinental line from Salt Lake City to Oakland, California, challenging the Southern Pacific monopoly. Backed by financier George Gould, it featured innovative engineering including the Feather River Route with its famous tunnels and bridges. Construction faced rugged Sierra Nevada terrain and financial hurdles but introduced advanced steam locomotives like 2-8-2 Mikados.
