First Train Service on the Azores Railway

On July 18, 1863, the inaugural train operated on the narrow-gauge Azores Railway, connecting Ponta Delgada harbor to agricultural districts on São Miguel Island. Built to serve the growing export trade in oranges and pineapples, the 12 km line used small 0-4-0 tank locomotives imported from Britain. This project overcame volcanic terrain challenges with innovative trestle bridges and was financed by local merchants. It represented an early example of colonial-era infrastructure boosting island economies and later influenced narrow-gauge designs used across Portuguese territories.
