First railway opens in New Zealand

On July 18, 1868, the Ferrymead Railway inaugurated service with a small tank locomotive hauling passengers and freight over a 4-mile line. Built to 5 ft 3 in gauge to connect the port at Ferrymead with Christchurch, it overcame swampy terrain using timber viaducts. This modest line marked the birth of rail transport in the colony, spurring economic growth and setting the stage for the extensive New Zealand network. Engineer George Holmes oversaw construction, and the opening ceremony drew large crowds celebrating the end of isolation for the Canterbury Plains.
