Great Northern Railway electrification trial

On July 18, 1903, the Great Northern Railway conducted its first public electric passenger run using a converted steam locomotive and third-rail pickup between Finsbury Park and High Barnet. Engineer Charles H. Merz supervised the trial, which demonstrated smoother acceleration and reduced smoke in tunnels. The experiment influenced later suburban electrification schemes across Britain and showcased the advantages of electric traction for dense commuter traffic, paving the way for the 750 V DC system still used today.
