On July 18, 1928, the Canadian National Railway completed the legal merger with the Grand Trunk Railway, ending years of financial turmoil. The integration added thousands of miles of track, including the iconic Victoria Bridge at Montreal, and brought 4-8-2 Mountain-type locomotives into CN's fleet. This reorganization strengthened Canada's transcontinental network and allowed unified operations that would prove vital during the Great Depression and World War II.
