York to Scarborough Line Opening

On July 22, 1848, the York and North Midland Railway completed its coastal extension, allowing the first through trains from York to Scarborough. Promoted by George Hudson, this 42-mile line crossed challenging terrain with elegant viaducts and cuttings. It transformed leisure travel by enabling day trips to the seaside for factory workers, spurring resort development. Early services used 2-2-2 locomotives hauling wooden-bodied carriages. The route remains in use today as part of the North Yorkshire coast network.
