July 22, 1934 saw the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad's Pioneer Zephyr complete a non-stop demonstration run from Denver to Chicago in just over 13 hours, averaging 77 mph. Designed by Budd Company with diesel power from Electro-Motive, the articulated train showcased lightweight construction and Art Deco styling. The run captured public imagination during the Great Depression and ushered in the streamlined era, influencing passenger train design worldwide for decades.
