Erie Railroad Opens First Section

On July 22, 1848, the Erie Railroad opened its first operational section between Piermont on the Hudson River and Goshen in Orange County, New York. This 47-mile stretch represented a major engineering achievement for its time, utilizing the innovative 6-foot broad gauge that would become the Erie's signature. Prominent figures such as Eleazar Lord and early investors navigated financial hurdles and challenging terrain including steep grades and river crossings.
