First Chilean Railroad Opens

On July 24, 1848, the Copiapó-Caldera Railway inaugurated Chile's first operational railroad, a 25-mile line connecting the port of Caldera with the mining town of Copiapó. Engineered by American William Wheelwright using British locomotives, the line overcame arid desert terrain with wooden trestles and gentle grades suited to early steam power. This project catalyzed Chile's mining boom by slashing transport times for copper and silver, while introducing standardized track gauges that influenced later Andean lines. Its success inspired regional expansion and demonstrated how rail infrastructure could integrate remote economies into global trade networks.
