First Train on Northern Pacific Railroad

On July 27, 1883, the Northern Pacific Railroad celebrated the arrival of its first through passenger train from St. Paul to Seattle, completing America's second transcontinental line. Led by president Henry Villard, the event featured the famous 'Last Spike' ceremony at Gold Creek, Montana. The route spanned 6,800 miles with engineering feats like the Stampede Tunnel. It spurred western settlement, timber and mining industries, and used 4-4-0 American locomotives initially, later evolving to heavier power, profoundly shaping U.S. economic expansion.
