First Passenger Train on Alaska Central Railway

July 27, 1907, saw the Alaska Central Railway operate its inaugural passenger train from Seward, Alaska, heading north along the planned route to the interior. This narrow-gauge line was intended to open up mineral resources and connect remote areas. Engineer and promoter John Ballaine played a central role in securing funding despite harsh conditions including permafrost and steep grades. The train consisted of a small steam locomotive and wooden coaches carrying dignitaries and workers. Engineering challenges included building trestles over rivers and tunneling through mountains. The event symbolized the push for Alaskan statehood and economic integration with the lower 48 states. Though the company later reorganized into the Alaska Railroad, this run marked a pivotal step in northern railroading history and inspired future federal investments.
