Berlin S-Bahn Electrification

On July 28, 1928, the Berlin S-Bahn finished electrifying its northern suburban lines using a 750V DC third-rail system. This upgrade replaced steam locomotives with efficient electric multiple units, reducing pollution and increasing frequency in the growing metropolis. Engineers from Siemens and AEG collaborated on the project amid the Weimar Republic's infrastructure boom. The change supported Berlin's rapid urbanization and influenced subway and commuter rail designs worldwide. It allowed seamless integration with the U-Bahn and set standards for European urban rail systems still in use today.
