On July 28, 1837, the Grand Junction Railway inaugurated its 82-mile line from Birmingham to Warrington, linking with the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. Engineered by Joseph Locke with innovative cuttings and viaducts, the route used early 0-4-0 locomotives like the 'Wildfire'. This development unified northern England's industrial centers, slashing travel times from days to hours and spurring economic growth during the Railway Mania era.
