The Central London Railway opened on July 29, 1900, providing the first deep-level electric tube service in the British capital with 11 stations. Powered by 600-volt DC third-rail systems and using electric multiple units, it bypassed surface congestion and carried over 40,000 passengers daily at a flat twopenny fare. Engineer Sir Benjamin Baker overcame water-bearing clay with innovative tunneling shields.
