Union Pacific Reaches Cheyenne

On July 31, 1867, the first Union Pacific train steamed into Cheyenne, Wyoming Territory, as crews pushed westward toward the eventual meeting with the Central Pacific at Promontory Summit. This arrival transformed the frontier outpost into a bustling rail hub, complete with roundhouses and supply depots. Chief engineer Grenville Dodge oversaw the challenging grading across the high plains, using thousands of Irish and Civil War veteran laborers. The event accelerated settlement and commerce, connecting the eastern states to the Rocky Mountain region and foreshadowing the 1869 golden spike ceremony. Model railroaders often recreate the wooden depots and 4-4-0 locomotives that defined this era of rapid expansion.
