Berlin S-Bahn Electrification

On July 31, 1923, the Berlin S-Bahn completed major electrification upgrades, converting steam lines to 750V DC third-rail operation across key routes. This innovation allowed faster, cleaner service for the growing metropolis and influenced subway and commuter systems worldwide. Engineers from the Deutsche Reichsbahn designed specialized multiple-unit trains that became icons of German rail efficiency. The project supported post-World War I recovery by improving worker mobility and set standards for integrated urban rail networks still in use today.
