Last British Railways Steam Locomotive

On August 1, 1956, British Railways outshopped the last steam locomotive constructed for its network, a BR Standard Class 9F 2-10-0 named Evening Star. Designed for heavy freight, the 9F class represented the pinnacle of British steam technology with its large boiler and powerful tractive effort. Although dieselization was underway, Evening Star operated until 1965 and was preserved, symbolizing the end of an era. The event highlighted the transition from steam to modern traction across Europe.
