First train reaches Santa Fe on AT&SF

The arrival of the first AT&SF train in Santa Fe on July 31, 1872, ended the city's long isolation from rail service and cemented the railroad's role in opening the American Southwest. Construction crews overcame rugged terrain and Apache resistance to lay track from Raton Pass southward. The event triggered rapid economic growth, with Santa Fe becoming a major hub for wool, hides, and later tourism via the famed Super Chief. The railroad's adoption of standard gauge and later dieselization under Fred Gurley shaped modern freight corridors still vital to BNSF today.
