First Train Service in Argentina

On August 2, 1880, Argentina launched regular passenger and freight service on the Buenos Aires Western Railway's extension to Campana. This 40-mile line used British-built 4-4-0 locomotives and helped integrate the pampas economy with the capital's ports. President Julio Roca championed the project to modernize the nation post-independence wars. It overcame flooding challenges with raised embankments and spurred immigration-driven growth. The event laid groundwork for South America's extensive rail systems, connecting remote regions and enabling agricultural exports that defined Argentina's golden age.
