Empire Builder Train Inaugurated

On August 7, 1925, the Great Northern Railway introduced the Empire Builder, named after company founder James J. Hill. This luxury train featured Pullman sleeping cars, dining service, and observation lounges, traversing 2,200 miles through the northern Rockies. It addressed growing demand for comfortable long-distance travel amid competition from automobiles. Engineering highlights included powerful 4-8-4 steam locomotives tackling steep grades. The service connected rural communities to urban centers, boosting tourism to Glacier National Park. Its success led to dieselization in the 1940s and Amtrak continuation today.
