First Electric Streetcar Service in Britain

On August 9, 1883, the Volk's Electric Railway commenced service along the Brighton seafront, becoming the first public electric railway in the United Kingdom. Inventor Magnus Volk designed the 2-foot gauge line using a third-rail system powered by a small generator. The single-car tram carried passengers one mile at speeds up to 8 mph. Despite initial skepticism from horse-drawn transport interests, the line proved popular with tourists and locals alike. It overcame engineering challenges including tidal exposure and corrosion. The railway still operates today as a heritage line, demonstrating early adoption of electric traction that would later transform city streetcar networks worldwide.
