Launch of Japan's Shinkansen Bullet Train

On August 9, 1963, test runs concluded successfully ahead of the October public launch, but the infrastructure and 0 Series trains were formally accepted on this date. Designed by Hideo Shima and built by Japanese National Railways, the 320-mile line used dedicated tracks, automatic train control, and aerodynamic 12-car sets capable of 130 mph. Overcoming mountainous terrain with long tunnels and viaducts, the project was completed in just five years. It carried 100 million passengers in its first three years, proving high-speed rail's viability and inspiring systems in Europe and China. The Shinkansen reduced Tokyo-Osaka travel to four hours, boosting economic integration and setting safety records with zero passenger fatalities from accidents.
