The Okinawa Urban Monorail is opened in Naha, Okinawa

On August 10, 2003, the Okinawa Urban Monorail, known locally as the 'Yui Rail,' officially opened in Naha, Okinawa, marking a transformative moment for transportation on the island. The monorail was the first rail-based transportation system in Okinawa since the destruction of its streetcar network during World War II. This long-awaited project provided a modern, efficient transit solution for both residents and tourists in the region, which had previously been heavily reliant on buses, cars, and scooters for transportation. The Yui Rail initially spanned 12.9 kilometers (8 miles), connecting Naha Airport to Shuri, a district known for its historic Shuri Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The system included 15 stations, each designed with a unique architectural style reflecting Okinawan culture and heritage. The monorail trains were lightweight, rubber-tired, and fully automated, operating on an elevated track above the bustling streets of Naha. The project had faced significant challenges during its development, including limited space in the densely populated city and the high costs associated with building elevated infrastructure. Nonetheless, the Japanese government, along with local authorities, pushed forward with the initiative as a way to reduce traffic congestion, promote tourism, and provide a sustainable transit option for the growing population.
