First Section of Leipzig-Dresden Railway Opens

On August 10, 1839, the Leipzig-Dresden Railway inaugurated service between Leipzig and Althen, becoming Germany's second public railway after the Nuremberg-Fürth line. Engineered by Gustav Harkort with British influence from George Stephenson's designs, the 10-kilometer stretch used 4-2-0 locomotives built by the firm of Rothwell & Company. This event accelerated industrial growth in Saxony by linking textile centers and coal fields, overcoming challenges like swampy terrain with innovative embankments. It paved the way for Germany's unified rail network and inspired further lines across Europe, demonstrating steam power's viability for freight and passengers alike.
