Opening of the Frankfurt-Offenbach Local Railway

On August 10, 1842, the Frankfurt-Offenbach Local Railway inaugurated service with the steam locomotive named 'Main' pulling inaugural trains over the 5.6 km line. This marked one of the earliest public steam railways in the German Confederation, overcoming engineering challenges like bridging the Main River with a wooden trestle. Key figures included engineer Paul Camille von Denis. The line connected merchants and travelers, spurring industrial growth in the Rhine-Main area and serving as a model for subsequent German rail networks. Its success influenced the rapid expansion of the Deutsche Reichsbahn decades later, and today remnants are integrated into the Frankfurt S-Bahn system.
