Runcorn Railway Bridge Opens

The Runcorn Railway Bridge, a wrought-iron lattice girder structure, opened to rail traffic on August 12, 1865, connecting the London and North Western Railway lines between Ditton Junction and Runcorn. Engineered by William Baker, it featured a 300-foot main span and overcame significant tidal and navigational challenges on the Mersey. This crossing dramatically shortened routes between Liverpool and the industrial heartlands of Cheshire and Lancashire, boosting freight and passenger services. It remains a key part of the West Coast Main Line today.
