Buenos Aires Underground Line A Opens

Buenos Aires opened its Line A on August 12, 1908, running from Plaza de Mayo to Plaza Miserere using wooden-bodied electric cars built by La Brugeoise et Nivelles. As the first underground railway in Latin America, it alleviated severe street congestion in the growing capital and set the template for rapid transit expansion across the continent. The line featured cut-and-cover construction and innovative third-rail power collection, remaining in daily service more than a century later with many original cars preserved.
