Northern Pacific Railway opens first section

On August 12, 1872, the Northern Pacific Railway opened its first operational section from Carlton to Brainerd in Minnesota. Financed by Jay Cooke, this milestone advanced the first northern transcontinental line. Engineers overcame swampy terrain and river crossings using early wood-burning locomotives like the Minnetonka. The opening spurred settlement and timber industries, connecting the Upper Midwest toward the Pacific Northwest and symbolizing post-Civil War expansion. Its legacy includes the later completion to Puget Sound in 1883.
