Launch of Electric Streetcar Service in Richmond

August 14, 1888 saw the debut of Frank Sprague's electric trolley system in Richmond, Virginia, with the first revenue service on the Richmond Union Passenger Railway. Overcoming hills that defeated horse-drawn cars, Sprague's overhead wire and motor design proved reliable and scalable.
