Inauguration of Tokyo's First Streetcar Line

Tokyo's first electric streetcar line opened on August 19, 1901, running from Shinbashi to Shinagawa under the Tokyo Electric Railway. This 6-kilometer route replaced horse-drawn trams and introduced overhead electrification technology imported from the United States. It eased congestion in the rapidly growing capital and supported Japan's Meiji-era industrialization by improving worker mobility. The system expanded quickly, influencing subway planning decades later. Notable for its role in urban electrification, the streetcar helped establish Japan as an early adopter of electric rail in Asia.
