Opening of the South Devon Railway extension

On August 20, 1848, the South Devon Railway completed its extension from Newton Abbot to Torquay, marking a significant step in Britain's expanding rail network. Engineered by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the line initially used innovative but ultimately unsuccessful atmospheric propulsion, where trains were pushed by air pressure in a pipe. This engineering challenge highlighted the difficulties of early vacuum technology. The opening connected the scenic Devon coast to major cities, spurring tourism and economic growth. It later converted to conventional steam locomotives, influencing standard practices in British rail development and leaving a legacy in regional connectivity.
