Launch of Japan's First Electric Tram Line

On August 17, 1903, the Kyoto Electric Railway launched Japan's inaugural electric tram line between Kyoto Station and Fushimi. This 6-mile route used overhead catenary and 600V DC power, a major innovation over steam. Engineer Tanabe Sakuro designed the system, drawing from European models. It alleviated urban congestion and supported industrialization during the Meiji era. The trams carried 10,000 passengers daily initially.
