Grand Junction Railway opens fully

This 82-mile line was a major engineering feat of the 1830s, crossing the River Mersey and using innovative wrought-iron bridges. Designed by Joseph Locke, it linked industrial heartlands and enabled through services from London to Liverpool. The railway used early 0-4-0 locomotives and helped standardize track gauges across Britain, influencing the eventual 4 ft 8½ in gauge adoption. Its opening accelerated passenger and freight traffic, reducing travel times dramatically and spurring economic growth in the Midlands.
