Tokyo's First Electric Streetcar Line Opens

On August 22, 1901, the Tokyo Electric Railway launched Japan's inaugural electric streetcar line, running 6 miles from Shinbashi to Asakusa. This innovation replaced slower horse-drawn trams and introduced overhead catenary power at 600 volts DC, using double-truck cars built with American technology. Prominent engineers from General Electric assisted local teams led by Ichisuke Fujioka. The service transformed urban mobility in rapidly modernizing Tokyo, carrying thousands daily and reducing congestion. It connected key commercial districts and the famous Asakusa temple area.
