B&O Railroad Extends to Harpers Ferry

On August 22, 1837, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad completed its line to Harpers Ferry, marking a major milestone in early American railroading. This 80-mile extension from Baltimore overcame significant engineering challenges, including the construction of the historic Bollman Truss Bridge and navigation through the Blue Ridge Mountains. Key figures included B&O chief engineer Benjamin Latrobe and financier Philip Thomas.
