Panama Railway Opens

On August 22, 1854, the Panama Railway officially opened, linking Colón on the Atlantic to Panama City on the Pacific after five years of grueling construction through jungle and mountains. Engineered by American William H. Aspinwall and financed during the California Gold Rush, the 47-mile line used 5-foot gauge track and early steam locomotives like the 4-4-0 type. It dramatically shortened travel between oceans, carrying passengers and freight before the canal existed. The project overcame yellow fever outbreaks and engineering challenges with innovative trestles and cuts. Its success influenced global rail projects and boosted U.S. interest in Central America.
