Norway's First Railway Opens

On August 24, 1854, Norway inaugurated its first railway, the Hovedbanen connecting Christiania (now Oslo) to Eidsvoll. Engineered by British firm Robert Stephenson & Co., the 68 km line overcame challenging terrain with wooden bridges and gentle gradients suited to early 0-4-2 locomotives. It carried both passengers and vital timber exports, boosting economic integration. Key figures included engineer Carl Abraham Pihl and King Oscar I, who attended the opening. This milestone laid the foundation for Norway's extensive rail network, influencing later mountain lines and connecting remote regions to European trade routes.
